Hello Everyone,
I have a question. I have been looking up some of the Salvage/Scrap yards in Washington.
On one site they said they would not take junk cars unless all fluids had been drained from the vehicle (ex. oil, fuel etc.) Is this standard from most of the auto salvage places?
And in Washington which ones pay the best?
I did not see this on all of the websites. Thanks for the info.
No I don't thinks so; in fact, I think most will take it with fluids since they are equipped to remove them themselves.
I can't speak to the pay because we currently don't pay for junk vehicles. There seems to be an abundance in this state.
"There seems to be an abundance in this state. "
that is very true. I took a trip out to Orcas Island (before the old ferries were axed) with my boyfriend when he went to pick up a wrecked volkswagon. We were talking to the sherif out there and he was saying that one of the problems they have on the Islands is that they have so many broke down vehicles that have been abandoned/etc on peoples property.
Including WWII vehicles etc (if anyones looking for those types of vehicle parts the sheriff mentioned there are many varietys out that ways you just have to look).
The sheriff also mentioned that they were in need of someone to be their oncall tow person. Due to the inaccessability of being on an island it makes it harder to get accidents etc towed off island. I imagine it must be that much harder to get out there now with the ferries being more limited... and more expensive. ...what a person really could use is a tow truck and a nice big old barge of their own to take those cars to the salvage yards...
Anyways. im rambling.. thanks for the reply and information Bill

Interesting, I have lived here on Orcas for the last 38 years & have been the only RTTO since 2001, I do all the towing/impounding for the Sheriff's Dept here on Orcas & they only have maybe 2 calls per month for impounds/accidents. We have never been late for even one call since since I took over & have a close working relationship with the local officers, wonder what they would do with another tow company here? Split the 2 calls per month????
Sure you were talking to the Sheriff? '
'The Sheriff lives on San Juan Island, we have not lost any ferries here & I have not seen any WWII vehicles except restored in peoples garages.... makes no sense,
hmm must have been bad information from the guy we talked to.. he was in a police car though.. =)
Sounds more like Lopez Island, there is no RTTO or tow company there & we have all been working on trying to find a local candidate to either work for my company over there or I would help them get started at a RTTO.
I get called over there for the blocking accidents/impounds, heck even for lockouts, I feel bad charging over 4 hrs for a lockout...ouch!
I don't know about Orcas or Lopez cuase I haven't been there but I have picked up lots of scrap off Vashon Island and once the junk goes over onto the Islands it doesnt come back after a breakdown or sitting for to long unless someone with a tow truck brings it back and that is costly so they just let them sit and rot.
Auto tech, Are you Uzek from Orcas? If so I just put that together and didn't know you were!
Yep, thats me Josh, small world isn't it?
We have a pretty good program for junkers here on Orcas & San juan Island where SJC Public works reimburses us for tow & disposal fees if the abandoned/junk car was on county roadway & was not redeemed by the R.O., different story on private property though.
Yeah, It is a small world! I have seen your auto tech name on here many times but didn't realize it was you. Good to know! That program sounds pretty good but where do you take the cars when you have to get rid of them? Off the Island? What do you do with the PPI's? do you charge them or just turn them down?
Larrys auto wrecking comes when we get 3 or more junkers, I pay him $170 per car/truck, sometimes I will take one on the wheel lift if I have a retail call going over on the bed.
For me to haul 2 junk cars over to the mainland takes a 7hr round trip, $129.00 ferry ticket, wear/tear & fuel, makes more sense to pay Larrys to come over.
On PPI's our contract with the property owner/custodian states they pay for the tow, processing ($150) & the disposal costs ($170) if the car is not redeemed & it is a civil matter for them to go after the R.O The property agents are very understanding as long as they are informed ahead of time, I get stuck with very few unpaid junkers.
I cant complain too much here but I have worked very hard & long to get these systems in place.
