last night we towed in a car that was towed for trespass.we disabled the car so the people couldnt just drive off with the car.we dont have a gate or fence but we put them in our building but we got busy and couldnt.
someone took the car after we left the property and the cops said there was nothing they could do,because we dont know who took it.
any one else have these kinds of problems?if so,how do you correct it

Wow, that sucks!

Funny the cops wouldn't help.  :brow:  Seems the prime suspect is the vehicles owner. We have had cars stolen from impound by the owner before; police charge them with theft and we re-impound the car.

In your situation, perhaps a wheel-lock (clamp) device would be a good idea on cars stored outside.

With no gated/fenced area, the only solution I see is, take the time no matter how busy you get and put the vehicles in the building where noone can get to them.
We have had 1 impound that the creaps cut the locks and took the vehicle out of our Impound Lot, but that was when we usta leave the keys with the vehicle, that happens no more!  Pretty evident that it was the same creaps in it at time of Impound, as they had stolen property in it at time of arrest.  And the only vehicle gone was this P.O.S. motorhome,  we even had a Lexus valued at about $65,000 and a newer Ford 4x4 all razooed up and they were still there in the AM, go figure it out who broke in and stole their Impounded crappie Motorhome and they must have headed to the mountains, cause the authorities never found them or the vehicle.
NOW, all vehicles are locked up (if possible) and keys are dropped in our secured drop box with all the paperwork.

Good Luck

Man that sucks. I do find it funny that the cops can't help. hopefully you get this solved soon.

Derek

just a quick note.we have purchased one of the al-7 alpha locks.has any one had any problems with these?is there anything else short of putting up a fence that anyone else has done?
thanks for the help

I got one for you very creative .....we had a storage building were we use to put illegally parked cars and one day we couldn't get there fast enough and here they started a fire in a garbage can that was near a window opening ( use to be a warehouse no windows just bars) the fire dept. came and cut the lock and owners waiting were afraid for thier cars and drove them out. fire depts response was sorry we don't like what you do anyways.   long story short thou very funny we stopped to help out a father visiting his kids that just moved into the area(where we towed the car) and who shows up to pick up dad you guessed it the pyros and thier car.   we all know how this ended being that we already had dads car on the truck. lol

File a lien on the car they took.  Once the lien is inplace go and repo the car and charge them for both the impound and the repo.  We had someone cut the locks on are impound yard and took the car.  That's what we did.  Also the repo is around 250.00 normal.  this time it was three times that.  Send a message to the streets that you don't put up with that, or you will see it happen more and more.
Once here in Colorado we had a big parker night and we had the same thing happen the police told us if it was in the yard with a closing gate they could do sometime about it. But we had them out of the gate. I would think once they where called in to the police then you would have a record of the car being in your yard, Plus you would have an unpaid tow bill and you would know if the owner was the one who took it(how do you know it was them, They did not call the police on you for the car being gone, everyone trys to find ways to sue tow companys) and to me that is theft. If I walked up to a dealership and not paid the bill and just drove off, then I would go to jail for not paying for the service. Then why can someone just walk up to a tow yard and just drive off without paying for service? Well that is my 5 pennys worth
