I am going to try 1 last time to talk oput local PD into impounding DUI & DWLS (driving with license suspended), how many of your local depts impound as a general rule during these arrests, our officers drive the car to a "safe location" & "secure" the vehicle for the owner, seems like it would bring up a liability issue since the officer was the last 1 to have control of the vehicls, anybody have any past experiences either good or bad for these impounds & does your PD do it?
Hello from sunny (when its not raining) Orcas Island
Hello from sunny(when it's not raining)Oregon.
In Oregon, all the PD's immediately have DUIs/DWIs/DWLSs 's impounded. Driving with no insurance will get you impounded too.
Do you have a link to the state website with details on the DWLS/DUI impounding procedure?
For Oregon or Washington?
Oregon, I am looking for any info that may be usefull to put infront of our PD.
They won't even unlock cars for people anymore because of liability. They definitely don't drive some drunks POS to a safe location. They impound them.
I looked for about an hour last night, and I'll be damned if I can find it. What you should do is pm Bill and ask him if he can find some material on it.

In Calif. they impound them. DUI, DWI can be released to registered owner when they get out of jail. Driving without a license or on a suspended license is an automatic 30 day impound by law. It doesn't matter who the car is registered to either. If the person driving does not have a valid license , they take it. It costs them between $1,150 - 1,500 to get their car back at the end of 30 days and they have to get a release from the police before they pick it up from us. If it is the second DWLS, they take it for 30 days and the driver goes to jail. If it is a third DWLS, they take the car, the driver goes to jail and they can auction the car off. Again it doesn't matter who it's registered to. If the registration is out on the car it's up to the officer whether he impounds it for 30 days or not but he does impound it and they can get it back when they have paid the registration.
Well nothing's changed around here, yesterday I heard over the scanner they pulled a driver over for a warrant & DWLS about 10 miles from town, they pulled him over & reported on the radio that they were going to follow him back to the station, secure his car there & then arrest him.
Then today the sargeant is asking me to fit him in my repair shop schedule for a brake job on one of the P.D. Explorers, problem is we have almost 2 weeks on our schedule, yeah, he can wait like everyone else.
