So I've always hated towing for triple gay. Their dispatchers are idiots.
They don't pay well and all the other reasons that I have seen on this site and agree with. I would kick my own ass on a regular basis for not having the nuts to drop them.
So I decided to test it out and see what it was like without them. I started by turning down long distance tows for them. They gave me no end of crap and would threaten to tell the rep and just be real snotty and condecending.
But anyways I held fast cause I knew that I was making about 2 cents a mile with them any time I got over their 10 free and if I even missed one retail call or rotation cause I was 100 miles out for them that I was killing my profit margin. If I had to put a driver in the seat, I was losing money. So I do that for about a month and I'm making better money. So then the next step was to go out of service with them totally. So I started going out of service on Fridays. Then went up from there. Eventually I was out of service three out of 5 days.
Even better money. Less running. So I got a letter last Friday saying thanks for your service but Aug 1 will be the end of our contract. At first my heart sank a little. I knew that I was pissing them off
but kinda wanted that security blanket. Wanted to keep them on my terms. So anyway it's been a couple days now. My AAA check for the last two weeks was around 600. But I made up for it in the first two days that I wasnt with them.
It's early still but I found that as the weekend went on I was more and more stoked about it.
And by the end of the weekend I felt like a huge wieght had been lifted off my shoulders.
It may just be because I hated towing for them so much, but arent the AAA tows always the biggest pain in the ass? The rudest people? The worst directions? The 30 year old guys that can't change their own tire? The people that think they own you and the truck because they are AAA members? Funny the amount of
you can get use to.
So I'm scrapin the triple gay decals off the truck and feeling better about it every day. A couple people have said that I'll miss them come fall when it slows down. But it seems to me that when towin is busy....towin is busy. You can either be running the AAA crap rate tows or full price. Anyway to anyone who's ever posted on here about how
ty AAA is, THANKS.
It all built up and eventually sunk into the oh so thick cranium that I carry around.
Like the man said, "Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty I'm free at last".
Congradulations.
I know getting off of the teat can be difficult, even if the milk is sour. I was that way with CCAS for too long.
The reality is, they will still call. They will call nights and weekends when their contractors won't go out for $20. And that's your chance to make some REAL money with them. When they don't care how much, they just need it done because they have called all their contractors 3 times each.
I just got back from a $100 local wrecker tow (paid with a CC) for Road America. The same Road America that dropped me last year because I wanted to raise my service call rate to all of $35!
Good for you!!
I know many companies that have dropped AAA, and the one thing they all quickly discovered, was how much money they were losing.
Some were able to downsize fleets, lay off some drivers, work less, and still have more profit.
