Hey guys, and girls.  My first post on this great website!  Well let me ask you all a question?  I'm going to take a job with the AAA company here in Cincinnati.  What do you guys think?I'm having a hard time getting any other tow service to hire me,  so I thought I'd go to AAA and get some experience. I know from reading your post that most do not like AAA. Hopefully you won't hold all that against me. Is there anyone out there that works for AAA that can give me some advise or tips? Any help would be great guys.

Thanks, and be care full out there, Bill

Hey Bill, welcome to ITOW Talk!

From what I've heard from other AAA drivers, the job is pretty good, decent benefits as well.

Our gripe with AAA is limited to the business practices of some AAA divisions that don't give a rip about their vendors.

We've got several AAA drivers here at ITOW, perhaps they can give you some first hand experiences.

I'm going to make a generalized statement, which certainly will not apply to all AAA vendors.

From my experience in this area, certain AAA vendors engage in unsafe practices on a daily basis. While this can be true of any company, I believe it is more likely with a AAA vendor because they are paid so much less on each call.

The things that I see locally are lack of a 4-point tie down, no wheel lift straps, etc.

If you need the job, go ahead and do it. Just be aware that you may not be taught the safe and proper way to tow. AAA publishes a towing guide (as well as a lockout guide) which will go a long ways in showing proper hookup points and towing procedures. Both guides are available from AW Direct for $30 each.

I suppose it is fair to make the statement regarding ANY towing operation, be aware of the safe and proper way to do things, regardless of what you are taught or what is generally done.

There's definitely some truth to that. Many AAA contractors make so little per call that cutbacks here and there are unavoidable, and those cutbacks inevitably effect the safety and level of service they can provide.
Looks like he is going to be working for AAA directly, rather than a contract vendor. So it may work out a little better...
I myself have to cousin's who drive for aaa fleet and they do like their job's but they say they are very corpoate now and have people digging to find ways to write someone up so just do your job with them and they will treat you fair is what i hear from my family
I work for AAA but not as a driver.  From what I have seen in browsing the AAA websites, most of the AAA clubs start out paying approx $10 per hour for light service drivers and $12 per hour for tow truck/flatbed operators.

Which is about $2 / hr more than they pay their contractors... LOL.

I noticed AAA light service trucks in Cleveland about a year ago, they keep coming further out. Now they are 1 city away. Just more work away from their contractors, pushing them to cut MORE corners to make a living.

They pay pretty dang well if your one of their drivers,i've got friends that drive for them out in nevada! :brows:  :drivin:  :thumb:
