hi,i'm new to this and purchasing a 1997 450 superduty to haul cars that people don't want anymore to the salvage yard.truck has the vulcan bed.i'm going to need as many tips and tricks as possible.thankyou to anyone that takes the time to reply.
one trick~ if you don't have keys or wheels are locked ect.  you can use a mix of dish  soap and water under the wheels and it will slid right off the deck.  best part is, all you have to do then is hose the deck off later.  hope this helps   :thumb:
sorry i must have missled you into thinking im getting a rollback but i'm get a tow truck with the wheelift.
Best tip I can offer is to never tow a car with the drive wheels on the ground, and always dolly the AWD's.
even if you put vehicle in neutral?
yep.  without the engine running, there is no pump to circulate the fluid.  then you run the risk of tying up the tranny.  as for the all wheel drive, some have an auto shift from 2 wheel to 4 wheel.  it can lock up and rip the vehicle out of the spoons.
Absolutely! Very few vehicles can be towed in neutral any more. Without the engine running, the trans in not being lubricated and will quickly fry.

Some manufacturers say you can tow their vehicles a short distance at a slow speed but that's it.

For a good reference manual that has tranny limitations, hook-up points, and towing instructions, pick up the AAA towing manual. Great publication.

The full time AWD's also have the front and rear wheels connected through a transfer case, which means one axle cannot turn without the other turning. In other words, when you attempt to tow them with a wheel-lift, the wheels on the ground will lock up after about 30ft and possibly cause drive train damage.

appeciate the replies, keep them coming,i'm learning off of each one.i'm not worried about the trannies frying i'm just taken to the scrap yard anyways.but i definetly wouldnt want it to lock up and come off the wheel lift.so i'll deffinetly take your guys advice.but what if i go to get a front wheel drive car and the back tires are flat.can i put the car in neutral then and tow the car backwards?
You can, (except on BMW's) as long as you don't mind killing a high dollar used part like a transmission. If you use dolly's, charge extra!

With BMW's, the steering geometry does not allow this vehicle to be towed backwards. If you do, the steer wheels will beginn to whip left and right causing damage and possably loss of control.
