hi everyone really enjoy all the great info on this site i used to tow in the 80's got out of it went to work for fords just took the buy out and bought me a rollback getting back into towing would like to know what the rates are in michigan area around detroit and southern citys if anyone can help me out with some figures i'd really appreciate it thanks everyone and keep up the good info .......KOZ'S TOWING ........
When I started out and wanted to know what my competition was charging I just got out the phone book and started calling around for some tow prices like I was a regular price shopper. I wrote it all down and figured out what I should be charging.
Hi Koz. Myself and my family also worked for Ford, in Cleveland.
Basically all you can do is "shop" the competition.
You'll find there are different kinds of companies. The ones that advertise in the phone books will be the most expensive. Maybe $50 - $100 for a local LD tow around here. My average tow is $65. I also do quite a few lockouts at $45 apiece.
Then there are those with decent trucks that only tow for shops and don't advertise. I've been told by local shops that they have a company doing their tows for $35. Probably not bad money if you can do them 2 at a time with a rollback. (Remember that they aren't paying advertising which can save $600 a month easy).
Then there are the ones that tow only by "word of mouth". These are the guys with the really crappy trucks that appeal to the "cheapos". They will usually work for "cash only". $20 - $40 will get you "push pulled or dragged in".

If you want to know the maximum rates for towing in the State of Michigan, I suggest you contact the Consumer Affairs Division for your County to make sure they don't have maximum amounts you are allowed to charge.
Here in Florida we are regulated by that division in our County they let us know the maximum we are allowed to charge for Police Directed Tows and Illegal Parks.
