I was wondering about a towing Issue that involves an 18 wheeler. The Police Impounded it, and when the towing company got there , He was in a 1 ton pick-up. But he drove my Truck (18 wheeler ) off, himself. Can he legally do that?
Interesting question. In my state of Washington, I think it would be legal. As long as the vehicle is "substantially in the same condition as when removed". Meaning it wasn't damaged.
I've never heard of a law preventing that. I can also confirm that our company and our city police have driven trucks to impound in the past.
Wouldn't make me feel good as a truck owner though. 
i work at hampton beach ,nh where we get a lot of want to be low riders and we tell them we can (1)either tow it and possible damage your car with after market suspension after you sign a damage waiver or (2) we can drive it to the garage.most of them let us drive it 
and we tell them they are still going to have to pay the tow fee one way or another .the cops dont have a problem with either way being done.
As long as the wrecker driver had the correct CDL etc,. Thought if Police officer ordered him to move it regardles of class of liscense I guess they whould. any other opionions?
i think the police dept needs to know what companies have in terms of equipment. they wouldnt want a 1 ton truck showing up for an over-turned tractor-trailer would they? our rotation list down here in florida is based on which class towing equipment you have.
I've seen this happen alot out in california,and up in my hometown but only big rig towing companies only not the little ones(light duty's) 
Here in niles il they have to tow it. no matter what because of insurance. if your towing a car and you damage it your insurance company will pay for the damages but not all companies will pay if they find out you were driving a vehicle and not towing it. also if you do damage the vehicle the owners insurance willnot cover the claim because you were not given permission to drive this vehicle by the owner of the car. so here if you dont have the right size truck they call the next man on the list and that is the right way to do it .this way every person gets a cal now and then not just the big guys.
