:help: I would like to know if there is any kind of listing that shows exactly what trucks do and do not need to have their drivelines removed. I am starting to do a lot of medium duty (Ford F450/550 GM 4500 etc) calls and would like to learn more to save time and try to make more money like everybody else. Any input would be greatly appreciated!!!
If the "drive" wheels are on the ground, either the driveshaft or the axles needs to come OUT... No ifs, ands,or buts...and No questions about it... that or YOU take a very GOOD chance of buying a transmission, the ONLY reason NOT to do the job properly(including pulling driveline)... is PURE LAZYNESS!!!, pull it , and charge for pulling it

100% correct!.think this way also and all prices are purely theoretical.lets say you towed the truck 25 miles for $200. after truck coverage (fuel, ins, payroll wear and tear) you see $100 profit because you pulled the drive line/axle(s).

now your Lazy and want to hurry so you don't pull the drive line/axle and head on down your way. about 24 2/3 miles later as your turning into your customers lot you look back and see the truck smoking from under the truck at the same time your customer sees it. you get out to pouring trans fluid everywhere and bellowing smoke.. congratulations you now have a baked trans on a truck that had a bad alternator.

now back to that $100 profit you were gunna make? well it wouldn't be right to still charge for the tow plus the cost of the new trans at anywhere from $900 to $7000 and the $200 you were going to make if you would just pulled the drive line!

If your a small company under 3 trucks you might as well not opened the door or answered the phone for 2-3 days and paid everyone to stand around watching TV.

Example: good friend of mine in early towing days got a 40 mile tow on a 96 econline cutaway Uhaul truck.auto trans. was to lazy to pull the shaft and 25 miles into the tow he looked back to find a fully engulfed Uhaul hooked to the back of his truck. by time it was over it was a total loss to the uhaul and extensive damage to the back of the Tow truck.

if you don't have the drive wheels OFF the ground. Pull the shaft. it takes 10 mins and you get to lay down on the job.

i will not pull the Drive line or axle if on the side of the freeway or heavy fast traffic. but you bet you will find me on the next exit laying down on the job.... i have kids.. i want to go home every night!

Roy,  I agree by experice if any drive wheel is on the ground remove the drive shaft.  If you go by somebodys list and the trans burns up guess what you are still liable for the repair.  So pull the shaft before you get shafted yourself !!:p

Did you know that a manual in newer Dodge 1 ton will durn up in under 100 miles... Well $3000 later I do, drop the shaft and save your cash  :thumb:
Sorry to hear about that Aaron. It wasn't the same week that all that other stuff happened was it! :thud:
