Any brand new, completely re-designed truck is going to have problems. I was wondering what kind of problems others have had with their 2002 International trucks.
When I first took delivery of my 2002, about 10,000 miles ago, I had to have some small, miscellaneous items, such as the e-brake handle, changed under recall.

Since then, I have had the computer program updated twice, which fixed a problem that caused my center consol switches to quit working, and my electric window modules (switches) in the doors were replaced under recall, because they sometimes quit working.

I recently upgraded the radio, which needed to be reset every two days, to a factory CD player which fixed that problem.

While all of the problems above have been experienced by many owners of the 2002, I did have one very unusual problem.

My right blinker came on during the night, prompting a 3 a.m. call from my neighbor. But, while the key was in the on position everything was normal. So, instead of going right to the International dealer, I decided to work the truck that day and hit the dealer that night.

After about 5 hours into the day, the blinker was on ALL THE TIME! So I headed straight to the dealer which was 40 miles away. Boy! did I look like a dumb a$$ driving with my blinker on for 40 miles. People were honking and waving. The dealer assumed it was a computer problem because that's when I got my second program update, and it seemed to fix it.

Overall, I really love the truck, and will be buying another one really soon. The new truck bugs seem to ironed out, and it's a joy to drive. I don't think I'll be abiding by the recommended oil change interval of 14,000 miles though.

Too funny about the flasher. Maybe a right-wing conspiracy! The radio is minor, but the new ones (three) have a dump problem (for airride). Still minor. Other than that they are always on the road doing what they do best.
International, just as a lot of manufacturers have had problems since '98 & '99. It will take a few years yet to get the problems worked out. One of the problems that used to be mentioned about lo-profile trucks ( any make ),but got lost among other problems, was an inherent over-heating problem.

Open the hood & look @ the radiator. half of the grill opening is taken by the air-charge cooler. The raditors on most low-profile units are as small as any car, with a 4 cylinder engine === not enough cooling capacity for a diesel engine, especially with options.

During the hot, humid summer months ( high humidity, also),most of these units tend to over-heat,unless you are moving at 45 M.P.H. plus.

I always ask everyone, who picks up a vehicle @ my shop, about their vehicle;also do a lot of truck road service for commercial accounts. Maybe I'm lucky that way === always get a tremendous amount of information from the major fleets === especially while doing their road calls for disabled units. Don't forget, they get the newest trucks sooner & put more miles on them quicker then we do == look,listen.learn.

About two more years, the truck manufacturers should have everything together. Remember all the problems when cars started in the computer age? But today, maintanence & repairs have been drastically reduced == except for certain high mileage failures, and yes,the required diagnostic equipment does cost money for any shop to have & use properly.

When the truck manufacturers get it all straightened out,we will have access to the best towing / recovery equipment available --- until then, I guess we will all put up with some inherent problems.

we just took delivery saturday of our new 2002 international with a chevron 19 ft aluminum body and with only 455 miles on it the truck is 1 qt low on motor oil and the radio face says it is a cd radio but the radio does not have a place to  put the cd's in.also now the radio blew a fuse but we can't find the fuse box to replace the fuse.the only fuse box we see is the one on the drivers side under the hood.anyone know where it is??our dealer went on vacation right after dropping the truckoff and didnt give us the owner's manuals to look for stuff like that.any help would be appreciated
If the radio went blank, it probably needs to be reset. Mine did this about once a week until I got my CD Player. There is a small reset button on the front you can push with a pin or a sharp key.

If that's not the problem, the fuse panel is in the passenger side dash. just pull the dash panel off from the top. Most of the fuses are re-settable. Good Luck.

My 02 had a trans prob, the driver had blocked the street to load a car, got done put it in drive and nothing,I went up disc. a couple power leads under the hood for a couple sec.s and it made it back to the shop,it got towed to lodi N.J. to ALLISON that night, sat there for a week, they said they changed some solonoid in the trans.I picked it up ,made it 1 mile down the road and got the RANGE INHIBATED light and the CK TRANS light (origanal complaint) back on .So then off to Matamoras P.A. dealer wher they said it still had a trans prob. had a Allison machanic look at it again make some more changes and it seems fine now, after another week of sitting at a shop,It's been back in serv. now for whole week without a prob.
repo69: How many miles was on your truck when the tranny acted up? And have you had any other problems? Thanks
Bill == It's nice to see someone else from the East Coast  ( Jersey Guy?? -- Repo69) on here.
And to answer your e-mail question,no I do not own any 2000 to 2002 Internationals. It seems that all the manufacturers,in the last 3 years, are having problems.

My newest International is a 1980 s-1900 series with a 22 ft. steel bed ( third due flatbed when we are busy).

It goes great during snow-storms.I will really hate to retire it. It always takes me about 1 plus years to spec.out & order a unit===I really need ( like all of us ) , a unit to be on the road & not in the shop.

Maybe our only option will be a baby Pete or a kenworth unit.  More money, but what other options will we have??  Can't make money,if the wheels don't turn.

The best, newest, fanciest unit isn't worth a dime , if it can't do the job == GET OUT & GO & COME BACK.

Maybe Peterbilt & Kenworth have the same problems, with their down-sized units ( non-C.D.L. ),even on the east coast.

Hopefully in another year or two, all the new drivetrain components will be able to function together,in any manufacturers chassis ( they really need all the computers to be able to communicate to each other).

Talk later & have a GREAT NEW YEAR.
