im driving a 97 international and im getting up to 210 at times, today pulling a load going up a very long steep grade i hit 230 so i pulled over and let it boil over, while it was cooling i removed the a./c condensor cuz the finz where a lil bent up  and i continued on with no problems but it still runs around 210....is this normal? i dont want to overheat again, i need to go back up that hill to pick up the car and bring it back, im hoping without the car on the back it will run cooler going up this time.
210* is not a problem but much higher than that is. I'd guess that your cooling system is marginal and so it is running on the hot side and can't get rid of the heat fast enough for a hard pull.

If you need to pull a hill, it will help to SLOW DOWN and drop a gear or two. You want to keep the RPM's up and the speed down which will reduce load on the engine and produce less heat.

One of the first things to check is your fan clutch. It is made to engage the fan when the radiator is hot, and let it spin slower when not needed. You can find the fan test procedure on this page http://photos.thedieselstop.com/showgal....r=28385

thanks for the reply i just got back and i didnt have any problems i droped down to 4th and slowed down it didnt even get up to 210 but ofcourse it was early morning and no car on the back, also i noticed the truck has a brand new fan clutch on it so im thinking the previous owner was hunting this problem down before
Yep there's always a reason a truck is sold. That's why most cars on the side of the road have 30 day tags on them.

That's why I'll buy something that doesn't run before I'll buy something that "just needs XXX fixed". If it was that simple it would have been fixed already.

Does the truck have a T444E or DT466? My 00 IHC overheated on me once and it was the thermostat. it got stuck closed and caused the overheat problem. You might replace the t-stat juct to be sure with known good one. It could be sticking half open.
not sure exactly what it is all i know is its a 7.3L, after that day its been running really good, i think it was my unexperience mostly and mayby  the condensor that caused it to overheat, but yes i will be servicing the cooling system soon and will include a new stat like you suggest. anybody know whats norm for oil psi at idle? im running about 20 psi@ idle and 60psi@ 1500 n up
The 7.3L V8 is the T444E and the DT466 is the big inline 6. My T444E ran at about that same oil preasure so I believe your fine there.
Also the T444E is the same basic motor as Ford's 7.3L PowerStroke. The shortblock directly interchanges, some of the externals are different.

One note on that motor, the CPS sensor is prone to failure, when it does fail the motor just dies and will not restart. It is recommended to keep a spare.

all good info, thanks for helping a noob :thumb:
Yep! Jason is right! I too had to replace the camshaft position sensor.
