Hello,
I have a bunch of questions concerning a large truck I got a month back. I have a super low mileage Blue Crew Cab (3+3 technically) GMC 7000 truck. It has airbrakes (not a problem for me), an Alison Auto tranny and a 8.2 L Detroit Diesel motor.
I have NOTHING behind the cab except for double frame rails going out 18'8. The truck used to be some NYC municipal truck that had a huge walk in utility bed on the back.
Anyhow, I care to make it a large car carrier. the rear in the back is made to pull 6 union guys and a bulldozer from diner to diner in Queens. So it redlines at 5500 rpms and 55 mph. I wish to change the rear and keep the auto tranny.
How do I do that? I heard if I go from size 19 tires with 5 stud to 24s with 6 stud I can slow down the rpms a bit without touching the back at all. Can I get a split rear for it?
One person said they cost a fortune if they are from dump trucks and another claimed more reasonable instead.
Next question is that I wanted to make it a four car carrier. Yes, crazy I know, but my family business is electrical contractors who specialize in commercial and industrial. I wanted it to be all legal with the full insurance but to be able to pull contracting equipment like large lifts, transformers, etc....
Will the crew cab mess things up for the overhead bed? I never saw a Med Duty GM from that vintage with a bed over four doors. Will the bed have to be slung back for the rear set of doors?
Who sells refurbished old steel beds? I am looking for a 28 ft one. I have a 18' aluminum Chevron bed on a broken Ford 350 from the mid 80s, but refuse to stick it on this beast.
I do have access to a welder who does do truck shortening and extensions very reasonably. So adding extra frame for such a long bed isn't that bad for me.
Yeah, I know, I am crazy and so many questions for a first post too.
Thanks in Advance!
Tommy
