I am often asked if a city can build their own impound lot and require towing companies to bring all impounds to them. Here is an article about the city of Toledo trying to do exactly that. It will be interesting to see who prevails.

:veryangry: why don't they just do thier own towing, that's a bunch of bull crap thats taking profit away from towing companies, don't they realize the contraversy toledo is stirring up?lets hope the towing companies win this and put the city of toledo in thier place.... :headbang:
I tried the link but got a error, but if the city is willing to pay for impound, sounds pretty good. I mean think about it no more abandons left in your yard to deal with thats a big bonus right there. We usually deal on the storage just to get rid of the car.
That sounds all good but don't you realize the money they would take away from the companies there, thats thier bread and butter.i don't think taking food out of thier families mouth is right, thats just wrong to do that.this is where city bozo's should stay out of towing, and leave it to us the tow companies. :unclesam:  :headbang:

Towguy 128: If you have a problem with junkers, this would seem a good solution, but in the few instances that I've been witness to a city or municipality creating their own lot, they are careful to only accept the redeemable cars and they leave the junk for the tow companies.

Hey Bill, I'm glad to see your post and everyone's comments.  I live in toledo, but my employer doesn't tow for TPD.  They want the companies on rotation to jump through hoops which they do.  Then they turn around and do this.  We get $86 for PD calls.  Under this they want to charge $55.  That's what we get for a regular private tow!  No comp for having to winch out, 2nd truck or anything.  And, if I heard right, the area that they purchased, was used as a tow lot before and they were robbing him blind. FYI ~ I'm not sure if you heard or not, but the local association is sueing to stop the city tow yard.
Well, I hope they succeed in their suit. It doesn't seem fair to me that a city who receives financial assistance from the federal government (free money if you will) be allowed to compete in the private sector where we have no such subsidy.

I only hope that you guys can stick together and tell the city to .  :D

:hardrock:  :hardrock: i agree with that comment tell them to ----- off,
Ok I can see the lost money on storage, but it really burns my @$$ that you can get ticket and fine for throwing a piece of trash out the window but you can leave the whole car with no legal action or help for tow companies to get rid of it. :headbang:
Thats where they need to start doing vin checks and send a tow bill to the last registered owner, but one thing on this they seem to forget about the epa,i know for a fact they have shut down numerous salvage yards for the fact of having to many stored cars,it all has to do with ground quality.the rust, the rubber decay.and thats one thing toledo hasn't thought about.the only way to do away with an overage of abandoned vehicles is to crush them.or put them in river beds for levis, keeps the banks from decaying. :thumb:
