Ok look at this article and tell me whats wrong??????
STARTUP - A 23-year-old tow-truck driver from Marysville was seriously injured Sunday after he was hit by a disabled car that was struck by another driver on U.S. 2 near Startup, according to the State Patrol.
The man was listed in critical condition at Providence Medical Center in Everett with a head injury and broken bones, trooper Bob Wilson said.
The driver of the second car, a 16-year-old Lake Stevens boy, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular assault, Wilson said.
The accident occurred about 8:30 a.m. as the Marysville man was standing on the back of his flatbed tow truck preparing to load the disabled car on the road's shoulder, Wilson said. The pickup truck driven eastbound by the teen rear-ended the car, which struck the man on the truck.
Traffic was rerouted for five hours during the accident investigation.
For one it doesn't mention if he has a family. If it was a police officer or a fireman that got hurt on the job it would've made the "Front Page." but NO, us tow drivers get a paragraph. is that all we are worth... a paragraph? i think they need to describe more anout the job and how dangerous it is. they don't realize that everytime we pick up that DUI or disabled car on the side of the freeway that someone could actually hit us. thats by biggest fear in life is going to a call on the freeway and not coming home. anyways tell me what you think.
I know the only time ive ever seen a tow truck on the front page is when we are towing away wrecks from accidents. But i im also in a city of only 75000 and we've been lucky and only seen or compition roll one of there deck trucks (Knocks on wood). Also the RCMP have said that they are going to enforce the hiway act of When passing a emerency vehicle you must slow to 50km/h in city limits and 75 km/h on hwy but i have yet to see them enforce it. I am still having people whip by me at 110km/h +. Its crazy. Any who thats my two cents.
It was very upsetting to see that the details of the accident were not included in the news report. This young man was not standing on his flatbed truck, he was hooking the vehicle to be loaded when he was struck! The MINOR who was driving the vehicle that struck the disabled vehicle to be towed LAUNCHED over the tow truck... now tell me he was minding the SPEED LIMIT of that highway which is 55 mph! As a manager of a tow company I know how important safety is to our drivers - it scares us each and every day that we have to send one of our drivers out on dangerous highways and freeways, not knowing if something like this will occur. I think that all of us should send out our prayers to the driver AND his family! I do not feel that a person under 18 years of age should be allowed to drive without supervision of an adult! Most accidents involving teenagers are due to their friends distracting them while driving. Driving is a PRIVELAGE NOT A RIGHT! These teenagers do not believe in this, they (as most I have talked with) believe it is their American right to drive and do not view driving as a privelage! THIS HAS GOT TO CHANGE!
I saw the news coverage a few days ago and it didn't look good! I think I know what tow Co. it was too. hope he is ok!
I am the driver that was hit. I would also like to say that I am doing well. and yes the news papers are very terrible about the details. the local tv news station was even better from what i was told. it said something to the effect of the tow truck driver was transported to the hospital and that the kid was fine and released to his parents. I would like to thank all of the fellow tow companies and drivers for the support that i have recived in this difficult time in my life.
Wow! Glad you OK.
And, welcome to ITOW Talk!.
I've found that the press is rarely our friend.
Yeah!
Glad to hear your OK, I have had a few times on the side of the road where I was getting very nervous. The thing that makes me mad is most of these people can move over and they don't. From what I know WA has adopted the move over rule but nobody must know about it!
This lack of good media/press coverage is why our organization the Rode Eaglez Association is launching a towing community TV show. The show will run locally here in Idaho on KPIF-TV 15 out of Pocatello Idaho and will go national in 2008 sometime in July.
I would love to host your episodes here at ITOW for download. Let me know.
first of all,im glad to see that the tow truck operator was not killed.
As a former police officer ,i have taken some of my techniques from the police dept and used them in towing.
one of these is when you are doing anything besides a tow ,pull up behind the vehicle and swing out to the left if you are in the breakdown lane or swing out to the right if you are in the high speed side.the reason for this is it would be very hard for a car to hit you if the truck is sticking out beyond the disabled vehicle.the second thing is dont use your top work lights because you blind the cars coming up from behind you.while you are parked on the side of the road working on the breakdown vehicle, put your turn signal on as if you are getting back into traffic.some people will think you are getting back into traffic.
go to wastesafety.com and get one of the lime green jackets or vests AND WEAR IT EVERY TIME YOU GET OUT OF YOUR TRUCK TO WORK ON A VEHICLE.
