Does anyone know of any company's that let you tow at 21? I want to get a head start and get my foot in the door. I'm from Illinois. I'm having a hard time finding anywhere that doesn't require me to be 23 or older (mostly 25). I've called a handful of places and I am having no luck. Maybe you guys can help me out? thanks
The problem is with insurance, the insurance company is setting those guidelines to minimize loss. Every company is different; you need to check with them all until you find a company without that restriction. You may also check with very large companies because they may be self insured.
oh i totally understand its the insurance and not the company. ive tried the bigger ones and still ....25
whats funny tho is the relocation company by my house allows you to be 21 (but im a girl
) but the commercial towing(not as big of a risk due to less fast pace environment) you have to be 25. maybe cuz of the hazmat stuff? prolly ill keep looking i was just wondering if maybe i wasn't looking in the right place. thank you tho
Dear Doll: Have you ever thought of going into business for yourself. Granted it is costly but it can be done. When I started going towing even as a male in this industry I could not find anyone to hire me at 18, but I bought a good used ton and a half truck, joined a towing association one I'm currently President of, got good training from some industry pro's in my area and have grown into a company that now has 40 trucks in 4 western region states. Insurance is a factor just like it is in long haul trucking but once you start its a good life. Are you ready to make the time to be in towing? Its a 24/7/365 job, holidays are rare as when most are not working Christmas, New Years etc your on call the most. If your thinking that towing is a mans only industry think again I know many women who are in the business one is Mrs. Cole who along with her husband Gary Cole started Speeds in Oregon, another is in Utahand if you can tow Utah you can tow anywhere. I say the more women in the industry the better. If you need any more information email me at hwyhooker@hotmail.com and I'll try to help you. Maybe you might thing of the west to start in our industry, if so again email me, I'll hire you.
im towing now!!! YAY!!!
lets here the details! what truck are you starting in? Light duty?
Did you find a company with different rules??

Details: I'm just running on a flat bed and a self loader, Not doing heavy duty till i get my CDL, which ill get someday lol. As for the company rules, they just applied to get me insured and the insurance let me on, didn't have to write a letter and im not on any probation period. im excited! and i think im doing well, no ones complained, but im having a hard time with backing up having a car on the wheel lift
but i spent a few hours practicing where we got junk cars and im getting the hang of it now just slow lol. and ive never been so afraid of
up at a job ever in my life lol. cuz this is an awesome opportunity. and by the way im the first girl to EVER drive for the company
cant let em down!
Today was the first day on my own!
done with training. but that doesn't mean I'm done learning lol what a adrenaline rush when YOU'RE doing the relo and not just riding along and it was freaking day light out! lol good day tho

DEAR DOLL:
Glad to see your working, but there is the thing of hauling with a carrier and towing with a real tow truck. Lessons on backing into a garage repair stall inside a vehicle dealers repair shop are real skills, that you must master. But hey I started with one of the trucks I still use(see photo below) with over a million towing miles on it when I was 18 years old so good luck to you.
